About

Adama Balla Yerima was born on December 19, 1974 in Maiduguri, Borno State. Adama contracted polio at the age of 15 months because she missed a vaccination. This was because at that time, the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) was not always available in the hospitals and vaccination was not as regular as it is today. Adama’s passion today is to vigorously campaign towards polio eradication because of what polio has done to her personally. And now that polio vaccination is even door-to-door, Adama has made it her duty, and her job, to enlighten parents and caregivers on how important it is for their children to be immunised against this debilitating affliction, to be educated and empower in their own capacity and identity. She co-founded ZADAYA-KANEM POLIO AND DISABILITIES INITIATIVE (Zadaya-Kanem PDI) to further this pursuit. She has written three books, MY ATTEMPT AT SELF EXPRESSION (poetry), ECHOES OF MOTHERHOOD (play) and DREAMS (short-story). ZADAYA-KANEM Polio and Disabilities Initiative (ZADAYA-KANEM P.D.I) is a non-governmental, non-profit making development organization established in 2007 and duly registered with CAC in 2018 with the main purpose of providing services that support Polio eradication and engage persons with disabilities to participate in all aspects of life by integrating their issues into national development agenda based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
